Privacy Policy for Legally Smart Teens

Effective Date:1st February 2026

Introduction

Welcome to Legally Smart Teens (“we,” “us,” “our”). Protecting your privacy and the privacy of teens who use our platform and services (the “Service”) is a priority. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard personal information, and how we comply with applicable global privacy laws, including those that protect children and teens worldwide. This policy applies to all users aged 10–18 and their guardians/parents.

By using our Service, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy.

2. Scope and Legal Compliance

We are committed to complying with all applicable data protection and privacy laws that regulate the collection and handling of personal data, especially when the data subject is a minor. These laws include, but are not limited to:

2.1 United States – Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA):

If we collect information from children under the age of 13, we obtain verifiable parental consent before collection, use, or disclosure of that information. We clearly describe our data practices and provide parents with options to review, delete, and control their child’s information.

2.2 European Union – General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):

We apply GDPR principles where we process personal data of individuals located in the EU. GDPR provides children under 16 (or as low as 13 in some EU member states) special protections, including clear privacy notices and consent requirements, as well as rights to access, correct, and erase personal data.

2.3 United Kingdom – Age Appropriate Design Code (Children’s Code):

For users in the UK, we follow the Children’s Code principles, including privacy-by-default, minimizing data collection, and strong safeguards for children’s personal information.

2.4 Bermuda – Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) & Privacy Commissioner Oversight:

Our data practices comply with Bermuda’s Personal Information Protection Act 2016. Bermuda’s Privacy Commissioner provides regulatory oversight to ensure organizations handle personal information responsibly.

2.5 Bahamas – Data Protection Framework:

We respect data protection standards under the Bahamas Privacy of Personal Information Act (and incoming Data Protection Act 2025), ensuring personal data is handled lawfully, fairly, transparently, and securely.

2.6 Caribbean & Regional Norms:

We design our Service and privacy practices to align with emerging Caribbean privacy principles, including CARICOM Data Protection and Privacy Rules supporting individual control and transparency over personal information.

3. Personal Information We Collect

We collect only information that is necessary to provide our Service, including:

  • Account Information (e.g., username, email of parent/guardian for minors)
  • User Profile (age, school year, interests — only with consent)
  • Course Progress and Participation Data
  • Support and Feedback Information

We do not collect sensitive personal data (e.g., social security numbers, financial information) without explicit consent and a legitimate need.

4. How We Collect Personal Data

We collect personal data:

  • When a user registers for the course
  • When a parent/guardian provides consent for a minor
  • When a user participates in course activities
  • Through secure online forms and encrypted data storage

5. Lawful Bases for Data Processing

Depending on the user’s location and age:

  • Consent: For minors under the age threshold (e.g., under 13 under COPPA, under 16 in the EU) we obtain verifiable parental consent before processing their data.
  • Contractual Necessity: To provide our educational service and fulfill user interactions.
  • Legitimate Interests: For platform security, fraud prevention, and compliance with legal obligations.

6. Parental Rights and Consent

For children below applicable threshold ages (e.g., under 13 in the U.S.):

  • Parents or guardians must provide verifiable consent before a child’s personal information is collected or used.
  • Parents may review, correct, and request deletion of their child’s information.
  • Parents may withdraw consent at any time, and we will cease collecting data beyond what is legally required.

7. Minors’ Privacy Protections

We implement the following protections:

  • Minimized Data Collection: Only what is necessary to deliver the Service
  • High Default Privacy Settings for teen users
  • No Sharing of Personal Data with Third Parties for Marketing
  • Clear, Plain-Language Notices for Children and Teens

These practices support age-appropriate design and privacy-by-default principles recognized in child privacy frameworks around the world.

8. Data Usage and Disclosure

We use personal data to:

  • Administer user accounts and course progress
  • Communicate course updates and announcements
  • Improve the Service
  • Comply with legal requirements or court orders

We do not disclose personal information to advertisers or unrelated third parties.

9. International Data Transfers

Because we serve a global audience, personal data may be transferred outside a user’s home jurisdiction. We protect such transfers with appropriate safeguards.

10. Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures (e.g., encryption, access controls) to protect data against loss, unauthorized access, or disclosure.

11. User Rights Under Data Protection Laws

Depending on jurisdiction, users and parents may have:

  • The right to access personal data
  • The right to correct inaccurate information
  • The right to have data erased (“right to be forgotten”)
  • The right to object to processing
  • The right to request portability of personal information

12. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We do not use cookies and similar technologies to operate and improve the Service.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy to reflect legal, technical, or business changes. We will notify users and provide the updated effective date.
